A Toast to the Beat of Life

I like how the subject matter is forever jumping around and evolving into something else. Every time the music changes, either adding a beat or slowing down, the image compensates for that change. Or rather, the music is adhering to the image. For example, at one point there are shapes on the screen moving with the beat of the music. When the percussion switches tempo, however, the shapes instantly and seamlessly convert to something entirely different. There are new colors, patterns and movement to fit the new beat. I felt that there was never a part that didn’t belong or fit with the flow of the film.

During the viewing in class I enjoyed watching this seemingly random assortment of people, shapes, colors, beats, and so on, but I couldn’t quite think of any main connection to string the clips together. It just didn’t seem to have any sort of deliberate theme. After spending some time, I broke down and found the Scratch Film Junkies’ page. They describe the film as “a toast to the beat of life,” which now makes perfect sense. It is unpredictable, ever changing, and vivid, all of which can be used to describe life itself. So basically, I sure didn’t hate it.
